By using this Website, you signify your acknowledgment and agreement to these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree with these Terms and Conditions, DO NOT use this Website (as defined herein).

These Terms and Conditions govern the use of the Book Of Memories websites (the "Website") and other services (collectively the "Services"). FrontRunner Professional ("Company," "we," "us," "our") reserves the right in our sole discretion to change, amend or modify (the "changes") all or part of these Terms and Conditions at any time and from time to time for any reason. Any changes to these Terms and Conditions will be noted by indicating the date these Terms and Conditions were last made. Any changes will become effective no earlier than fourteen (14) days after they are posted; provided, however, that changes addressing new functions of the Services or changes made for legal reasons will be effective immediately. Your use or continued use of the Services after the date any such changes become effective shall constitute your express acceptance of the Terms and Conditions as changed, amended or modified.

Eligibility: Users under 18 years of age are not eligible to use the Services without consent. Users between the ages of 13 and 17, can use the Services with the consent and supervision of a parent or legal guardian who is at least 18 years of age; provided, however, that such parent or legal guardian agrees to be bound by these Terms and Conditions, and agrees to be responsible for such use of the Services. Company reserves the right to refuse use of the Services to anyone and to reject, cancel, interrupt, remove or suspend any Campaign, Donation, or the Services at any time for any reason without liability.

Definitions: In these Terms and Conditions "Campaign Organizers" means those raising funds, and "Campaigns" as their fundraising campaigns. Additionally, "Donors" means those contributing funds, and "Donations" as the funds they contribute. Campaign Organizers, Donors and other visitors to the Services are referred to collectively as "Users". The term "Campaign Organizers" shall also be deemed to include any individual(s) designated as a beneficiary of Campaigns.

Services: The Services are offered as a platform (the "Platform") to Users of the Services. Among other features, the Services are designed to allow Campaign Organizers to post Campaigns to the Platform to accept Donations from Donors. Although there are no fees to set up Campaigns, a portion of each Donation will be charged as fees for our Services and those of our third party payment processors. Company reserves the right to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Services with or without notice. You agree that Company will not be liable to you or to any third party for any modification, suspension or discontinuance thereof. The Company has no responsibility or liability for the deletion or failure to store any data or other content maintained or uploaded by the Services. To the extent you access the Services through a mobile device, your wireless service carrier's standard charges, data rates and other fees may apply. In addition, downloading, installing, or using certain Services may be prohibited or restricted by your carrier, and not all Services may work with all carriers or devices. By using the Services, you agree that we may communicate with you regarding Company and other entities by SMS, MMS, text message or other electronic means to your mobile device and that certain information about use of the Services may be communicated to us.

Charitable Giving: Campaigns are not charities to which you can make tax-deductible charitable contributions. Any Donation you make through the Platform may be processed by an unaffiliated business partner for which a processing fee (in addition to our FrontRunner Professional Fee) is deducted. You understand, acknowledge and agree that Company is not a charity, and Company does not solicit charitable donations for itself or for any third-party charitable institution. Company is merely acting as a payment facilitator for any Donations.

Administrative Platform Only: The Services are an administrative platform only. Company is not a broker, agent, financial institution, creditor or insurer for any user. Company has no control over the conduct of, or any information provided by Campaign Organizers, and Company hereby disclaims all liability in this regard. We expressly disclaim any liability or responsibility for the success or outcome of any Campaign. Donors must in their sole discretion make the final determination of making Donations to any Campaigns. All Donations are made voluntarily and at the sole discretion and risk of Donors. Company does not guarantee that Donations will be used as promised. Company does not endorse, guarantee, make representations, or provide warranties for or about the quality, safety, or legality of any Campaign. While we may help facilitate such registration in some cases, we are not a party to any such relationships and disclaim any responsibility or liability for the performance by such third parties. We may exchange information with such third party services in order to facilitate the provision of Services (and related third party services).

Donors agree to promptly update account information with any changes that may occur and to pay the Donation amount that you specify. Donors hereby authorize Company to bill Donors' credit cards and payment methods in advance on a periodic basis until Donors terminate periodic payments through the Platform.

Fees: Company does not charge Campaign Organizers any upfront fees for Campaigns. Company retains a portion of each Donation contributed to Campaigns in the amount of four percent (4%) ("FrontRunner Professional Fee"). A portion of the Donation is payable to our third party payment processors ("Processing Fee"). We reserve the right to change any of the Fees from time to time. If we change any of the Fees, we will provide notice of the change on the Website or otherwise, at our option, at least fourteen (14) days before the change is to take effect. Your continued use of the Services after the change in any of the Fees becomes effective constitutes your acceptance of the new Fees.

To the extent you are a resident of another jurisdiction, you waive any comparable statute or doctrine

Please share your favorite memory of Joel to be included in a special keepsake book for the family.
Joel Tuoriniemi, a resident of Fulton, passed away at the age of 50 on September 19, 2023, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Joel was born on November 8, 1972 in Laurium, son to William and Bonnie (Laurie) Tuoriniemi. Joel graduated from Calumet High School with the class of 1990. During this time he found his passion for golf and enjoyed playing hockey. Joel had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and one of his favorite hobbies was to learn about anything and everything through reading books, newspapers, and publications on many various topics. His love for learning followed him when he went on to attend Michigan Technological University with a degree in business and got his JD from Michigan State University (Detroit College of Law).

On August 5, 1995 he was united in marriage to the former Julianne Oja, and they resided in Fulton with their family.

Joel practiced law for Bob Anderson in Marquette, Wisti in Hancock and had his own practice in Calumet. His dedication for law never stopped, as he helped many people in the community even after formally transitioning out of his practice. In 2001 he went to work at Michigan Tech teaching taxation, accounting, and the legal environment of business. He also was currently the faculty athletic representative. At Michigan Tech he received the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award, the College of Business Teaching Award, and has also been inducted into the University’s Academy of Teaching Excellence. Joel loved teaching and cared dearly for all of his students. He would always say how lucky he was to wake up every morning and get to be so excited about his job.

He served on numerous boards over the years, including the Calumet Hockey Association and Keweenaw County Road Commission.

Living by his catchphrase “mean people suck”, Joel was an incredibly caring man who truly helped all of those around him in any way that he could. He loved to spend time at the 5 Mile Point camp, golfing, coaching and playing hockey, watching his kid’s hockey, deer hunting, and most recently he challenged himself by competing in triathlons.

He is survived by his wife Julianne; sons Wyatt of San Diego and Hunter of Fulton; daughter Hanna of Ann Arbor; mother Bonnie (Dave Shannon) Tuoriniemi of Ahmeek Location; brother Jesse of Mohawk; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceding him in death was his father William and his brother Jason.

An open memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 24th at 2:00 PM, with a gathering time of remembrance and refreshments following the service through the afternoon. The service will be located at the Hidden Pines Barn, located behind the Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home. Dress attire is casual.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Calumet Youth Hockey Fund.

The Erickson Crowley Peterson Funeral Home in Calumet is assisting the family with the arrangements.

I'm truly sorry to hear about the passing of Professor Joel Tuoriniemi. He was not just a teacher, but a remarkable human being whose warmth and kindness left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Professor Tuoriniemi's classes in business law and accounting were more than just educational experiences; they were a journey into the world of learning, where he made complex subjects seem approachable and engaging. His passion for teaching shone through in every lecture, and his dedication to his students was unwavering.

What set Joel apart was his ability to make each student feel special. He had a genuine interest in their success and well-being, and his door was always open for those seeking guidance and support. In his presence, you couldn't help but feel valued and appreciated.

Beyond his role as a teacher, Joel was a warm and compassionate soul. His kindness knew no bounds, and his positive energy brightened the lives of those around him. He was more than just an educator; he was a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration.

While his unexpected passing leaves a void that can never be filled, his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of the countless students and colleagues he touched throughout his life. Joel's memory will forever be a beacon of warmth, knowledge, and kindness in our lives.

May his family find solace in the knowledge that he made an indelible mark on the world, and may we all strive to carry forward the lessons he imparted and the love he shared.

Rest in peace, Professor Tuoriniemi. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

Very few people have all the wonderful qualities Joel brought into his world. I knew him as a colleague teaching accounting courses at Michigan Tech for many years until I retired. He definitely made long-lasting and very positive impressions on all of his students. I often heard students say “Be sure to take as many classes as you can from Joel Tuoriniemi!” Yes, he was that good!
It is hard to imagine Tech’s College of Business and our whole community without him. Joel will be missed by so many of us. Rest in peace.

Loss, Grief, Pain

The words that fill one when someone they truly admire and love passes from this life. Joel was that to uncountable people, including me.

I met Joel when I took Accounting 1 & 2 from him in the summer of 2005. It was a race through financial (“Cash is King!”) and managerial accounting in two back-to-back summer terms. Dealing with full-time work and 1 & 3 year-old boys at home, Joel was incredibly understanding of me as a non-traditional student. I fell in love with accounting under his guidance.

Subsequently, I pursued a PhD in finance. Joel served as a reference for doctoral studies. He was one of the first people that I contacted after the birth of my third son (“I’m one of three boys, too!”). I stayed in touch with him throughout my PhD and beyond. Then an opportunity arose to join the faculty at Michigan Tech. Joel was one of my interviewers, and it was like coming home to me.

From student to colleague. Joel made the transition effortless. He was someone I could count on for great analysis of an issue, classroom or college related. Joel had the ability to strip an issue down to its essence removing confounding emotions, reflecting his legal mind. Yet his ability to relate emotionally to the breadth of people on and off campus was unparalleled.

Last fall, in the grips of sadness Joel advised me to find some happiness. To truly seek it out and find it for my health. I took a tender idea to him in the later fall that had begun to take root. Something I wanted to pursue – motorcycling. He said to me, “Heather, if motorcycling will make you happy, do me a favor, buy two motorcycles.”

That’s how Joel was. All in. Ever present. Door always open, students always present. When he was not fighting for them, he was working effortlessly on behalf of the College’s priorities. Yet, we were just a part to his life. His family, his life on the Keweenaw, his personal pursuits – these were what he loved even more than all of us.

The afternoon before he died, I passed him on the way from classes, as he was heading to his. Enthusiasm apparent on his face at having the privilege of interacting with his students. Then a late afternoon meeting with him - hard work, a few laughs and then we adjourned. As I walked away, I heard him conversing with someone behind me. Not knowing it would be the last time I heard him. Just another normal time that I had taken for granted. He’d always be there. Until he wasn’t.

If only we had a model for how to cope with this loss. If only someone could show us how to go forward in the grip of such emptiness. But we do. Joel gave us that last fall as he continued on through the pain of the loss of his brother last summer. He did not hide his emotion, but he continued to interact with people and “show up.” Putting 110% into what he did and slowly, slowly the pain faded from his face as the year progressed.

At summer’s end, my son (whom is now an accounting student at Michigan Tech) and I were in the hallway. His first reaction on seeing us was, “How are you doing buddy?” to my son and “How is the motorcycle going?” to me. A warmth which surrounded him and for which those of us that had the pleasure of knowing him was a source of happiness. Incredible.

Love, service, goodness

This is how we will remember Joel.

Julianne, Wyatt, Hanna, Hunter, Bonnie and Jesse. My profoundest sympathies on the loss of your husband, father, son and brother. We are aching for all of you, too. Thank you for sharing him with us. He was our family, too.

I have struggled for the last week to write this. How can you sum up someone as amazing as Joel Tuoriniemi. I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that he is gone.

To Joel’s Family: I don’t have to tell you how amazing he was. You saw it every day of your lives. But I want you to know how much he cared about you. He always spoke of you proudly and at least one of your names were a part of an example in every tax class and were on every exam. It was like I knew you without ever meeting you. When I was up this past June, I chatted with him for quite a while on how you all were doing and how amazing he thought you all were. I hope you can find comfort in the fact that he is proudly watching over all of you still.

I can count on one hand the number of people outside my immediate family who have impacted my life as much as Joel. My current career is in Governmental Accounting which was the last course I had with him. I would never have gotten the job and done as well as I have without the in-depth knowledge and support he has given me over the years.

As a student, I saw how much Joel cared for his students and for the campus at large. Regardless of what your background was, if you needed his help, he was there. It didn’t matter what it was, personal, academic, you name it. You only have to look at Rate My Professor to know how well-liked Joel was by his students. Joel had one of if not the highest numbers of total ratings by students at tech. He also has one of the highest overall ratings at Tech. A lesser-known fact is how wide his teaching impact was. He was loved and respected by business students and engineers a like.

Joel inspired his students to share in helping the community at large. Every year under Joel’s leadership, tax students would volunteer to provide free income tax services (VITA) to those in the community that needed it. I remember him delivering donuts to the VITA room at 8:30am on April 15th as a thank you.

Joel’s way of teaching was different from every other professor I have had. Every semester always started out with the same message, don’t put your head down and go to sleep and don’t show up unprepared to class. Joel taught using the Socratic method. For those who don’t know what that means, he didn’t lecture in class, he showed up to class and started calling on people and asking questions about the reading assigned for that class period. Failure for the class to answer his questions would mean a pop quiz on the subject worth a high percentage of your grade. Only once did we ever have a pop quiz and only because Joel has a great sense of humor. Which leads me to one of my most memorable stories of him.

On Friday, April 1st, Joel walks into Governmental Accounting and starts asking questions like normal, but with one twist. No one in class can answer his questions. No amount of frantic page turning through the book can help anyone find anything close to the answer. As many of you could have guessed, Joel decided to pull an April Fools Day prank on the class and invent his own accounting concepts. Pop quiz time. To increase the stakes, Joel added one of his favorite concepts, game theory. Not answering the question got you a few points, answering but being wrong got you negative points. The first few questions were about his made-up concepts. Panic strewn glances are shot around the room with each question as the class collectively freaks out silently. This was a senior level, required course, several of us would not graduate in 4 weeks if we didn’t pass this class. His last question, what day is it? How he kept a straight face for that long is beyond me. You can add acting to the long list of his many talents.

This past April, one of his dear friends and colleague Sheila Milligan retired after a long career of teaching future accountants, including Joel. Joel reached out to her former students to let them know about her retirement party and to gather memories to be shared. It was one of the few times I have seen him choke up while talking as he shared remarks from former students. They were an iconic duo in the MTU Accounting Program with frequent banter between them over which was better, audit, or tax. I was looking forward to visiting his office during my trip to Tech this week, to discuss the accounting program and share some ideas I had for further honoring Sheila’s legacy. While I am sad that I couldn’t do that, I can take comfort that he is looking down laughing, because he finally found a way to get Sheila to teach tax. 

Joel’s knowledge of different business, legal and accounting subjects was enormous. He leaves behind huge void to fill at Michigan Tech and in the community. I wish there was more I could do to help fill the void that his passing leaves.

I was fortunate to have Joel as an instructor for Tax very early in his Tech career and I have always remembered his passion for the topics he was teaching and his ability to relate it to us as students. He will be sorely missed but the students who learned from him are certainly better for the time and positivity he put into us.
